Setup Guide
Get Stagger connected to your Tableau Cloud site in a few steps.
Before you start
- Tableau Cloud Site Administrator access — needed to create a Connected App.
- A Stagger account — start your free trial if you haven't already.
Create a Connected App
Connected Apps are Tableau's own secure credential system. They use short-lived JWT authentication, and unlike personal access tokens, their secrets don't expire on a timer.
- 1.Sign into your Tableau Cloud site as a Site Administrator.
- 2.Go to Settings → Connected Apps in the left sidebar.
- 3.Click "New Connected App" and choose Direct Trust.
- 4.Name it anything (e.g., "Stagger"). Click Create.
- 5.Click "Generate New Secret". Copy the Client ID, Secret ID, and Secret Value.
- 6.Toggle the Connected App status to Enabled.
Enter Credentials
- 1.Sign up or log in at getstagger.com.
- 2.Enter your Tableau Cloud URL and the three credentials (Client ID, Secret ID, Secret Value) from Step 1.
- 3.Stagger validates the connection and runs an initial sync.
First Sync
Once connected, Stagger scans your site for all extract refresh tasks. After the sync completes, you'll see your full refresh schedule on the dashboard — as a heatmap, an hourly distribution chart, and a health score.
Troubleshooting
"Connected App not found"
New Connected Apps can take a few minutes — sometimes up to an hour — to become active on Tableau's side. Give it a little time and try connecting again.
Permission denied
Make sure the Connected App status is set to Enabled in your Tableau Cloud settings.
Wrong credentials
Double-check that you copied the Secret Value (not the Secret ID) and that there are no trailing spaces or line breaks.
